STANHOPE STREET
RIBA Stages 0-7
Unit3 Architects have been appointed by Moose Coffee to design their new headquarters on Stanhope Street in Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle, a rapidly developing creative and commercial district. The project is a significant piece of urban regeneration, transforming a long-derelict industrial site into a contemporary commercial building that combines office space and warehouse functions.
The scheme involves the demolition of an existing dilapidated warehouse and the construction of a new two-storey office and warehouse hybrid. The architectural concept draws on the industrial vernacular of the site, with particular attention paid to preserving the street’s established grain, scale, and character. Elements of adaptive reuse architecture are integrated into the design by retaining the original concertina loading bay door and maintaining the existing street frontage height and massing.
The new building is designed to meet modern demands for flexible workspace, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability. The interior features open-plan layouts, natural daylighting strategies, and zones for collaborative working, all tailored to suit the operational needs of a growing commercial client. The use of robust and low-maintenance materials, such as exposed concrete, structural steelwork, and profiled metal cladding, underscores the building’s industrial design language.
An upper-level external balcony provides valuable staff amenity space, encouraging wellbeing and informal interaction within the workplace. This design element also connects the users to the surrounding cityscape, enhancing the overall user experience of the architecture.
The entire building has been designed to achieve full DDA compliance, with level access, an internal lift, and accessible facilities throughout. The scheme embodies principles of inclusive design, ensuring equitable access for all users.
Sustainability is a core component of the design strategy. The building incorporates high-performance insulation, energy-efficient lighting, and provisions for future photovoltaic panel installation. The use of sustainable building materials and passive design measures reinforces Unit3’s commitment to environmentally responsible commercial architecture.
This project demonstrates how thoughtful architectural intervention can repurpose underused urban sites into dynamic, functional, and characterful mixed-use commercial developments, reflecting both the heritage and future ambitions of Liverpool’s built environment.
