EFFECTS OF WAR ON WILDLIFE

Extensive human conflict can drive dramatic declines in wildlife and have overwhelmingly negative effects on ecosystem structures and functions. Dramatic habitat alteration, environmental pollution, and disturbance all contribute to population decline and bio-diversity losses.

Habitat destruction often occurs through both direct and indirect means following large scale population and troop movements, contamination, pollution and general destruction.

COMMON NIGHTINGALE

The shelter is intended to provide a temporary or long-term habitat for ground nesting birds such as the common nightingale. Its habitat often consists of thick vegetation, such as bushes and scrub as well as coppice woodland which is often cleared or destroyed in conflict zones.

The Common Nightingale is the national bird of Ukraine and has long been invoked in Ukrainian culture as a builder of homes and a harbinger of springtime renewal.

PATTERN

The symbolism of Ukrainian embroidery often contains hidden meanings. Traditionally, geometric patterns prevail in Western Ukraine, while Southern and Eastern Ukraine are characterised by plant and floral ornamentation. Flowers, branches and leaves signify constant renewal and infinity.

The geometric design applied to the bird box signifies habitat renewal in post-conflict war zones. The pattern consists of a base layer of luminescent colour over-painted with a black topcoat. The pattern is designed to break up the silhouette of the box during the day but create a symbol of hope at night.
