STUDIO IN THE WOODS 2018

Collaboration with the University of Liverpool

As part of our ongoing collaborative relationship with The University of Liverpool, this year we took 20 first year architecture students to North Wales for our annual ‘Studio in the Woods’ project.

The students worked with a real client to design and build a 1:1 scale garden cabin for entertaining and relaxation. The design was produced over 6 weeks – working from concept ideas and sketches through to final production drawings and cutting lists – and the build itself completed over just two days.

The wood used for the entire build was locally sourced larch which weathers and blends perfectly into the rural landscape over time.

The design is an internal 3x3m space for relaxation with a 2x3m cantilevered external deck for entertaining on and has a single pitched roof spanning from a height of 2m at the rear to 4m at the front. The building is also on a dramatic sloping site which provided many challenges for the students, which were all overcome and ultimately resulted in a dramatic visual impact.

The students were helped on the build by and camped with the ‘Woodlands Skills Centre’ in Bodfari where they got to speak to mentors in the evenings about woodland management, rural survival skills, foraging and bushcraft.

The client is delighted and we look forward to running Studio in the Woods next year.

Completed.
