Studio in the Woods #01
unit3 working in partnership with the University of Liverpool have launched their first ‘Studio in the Woods’ workshop which aims to give architecture students experience at building real structures using sustainable materials and traditional building techniques.
21 students from the university worked alongside unit3 in designing a bespoke shelter for the Woodland Skills Centre in Bodfari North Wales. The brief from the client was that the shelter should be muti-purpose, provide retreat from the elements, be an aesthetically pleasing design suitable for the woodlands context and have a 4m x 4m footprint.
The design created by the students included a dual pent roof with high level clerestory opening to allow light into the back of the shelter. The larch cladding used on the elevations was scorched to highlight the grain of the wood and provide a preservative finish. The build included ten 150×150 columns – the highest being over 4m in length, over 40m2 of cladding boards and 30m2 of roofing.
The team worked hard to get the structure completed in just 2 days and everyone involved had a great experience.
We aim to run ‘Studio in the Woods’ annually and already have a number of sites and clients lined up to take part.
