On the first weekend of June 2017, Unit3 and the University of Liverpool collaborated on our first ‘Studio in the Woods’ workshop which took 20 first-year architecture students to the Woodlands Skills Centre (WSC) in North Wales to build a 1:1 scale shelter.

The brief from the WSC was to design and build a semi-sheltered structure that could be used for storage of woodland materials and equipment whilst also allowing for campers to set up tents and cook in.

The shelter was designed over a couple of months at the university prior to the  students arriving at the WSC.

"We were involved in a very successful project with Liverpool University School of Architecture to rebuild one of our Forest School shelters. The students made various designs, which we commented on, and they then came up with a final design. Three of the students and two of the staff visited us and we agreed on the final design, materials list and construction techniques. The University paid for the materials (local larch) which we sourced and brought to site. A group of 20 students and 4 staff came for the weekend, camping on site and completed the building over the two days. It looks great." Rod Waterfield; Woodlands Skills Centre
