Studio in the Woods ’22

STUDIO IN THE WOODS 2022

RIBA Stages 0-7

This year, after a forced hiatus due to Covid, 20 BA1 students took part in the design and build of a 1:1 scale timber shelter for the Vale of Clwyd Scout Association in their privately owned woodlands in Rhewl North Wales.

Students expressed their interest in the programme early in Semester 2 and, working alongside the Client and architects from Unit3 Design Studio over several weeks, developed a sketch scheme, models, 3Ds and technical drawings for construction purposes.

The final design proposed comprises of two structures facing one another with space for a fire pit and overhead canopy in between. The smaller structure is a simple shelter for seating in whilst the larger structure (with a roof height at almost 6m from the floor level) contains a large multi-functional space at ground and a sleeping / storage upper floor.

Over the weekend workshop, the students were able to complete the frame of both structures, and despite time constraints were successful in cladding the entirety of the smaller structure and making a solid start on the cladding of the larger structure. The Client was over the moon with the progress made in just 2 days and will finish the cladding with the Scouts one weekend.

The workshop is organised and run by Liverpool Uni tutors Martin Shutt and Keith Webber, supported by architects Anthony Fogg and Callum Allison from Unit3 Design Studio. The project is assisted with construction technicians Rod Waterfield and Alan Waterfield from the Woodland Skills Centre.
