RUTHIN SCHOOL
RIBA Stages 0-3
Throughout 2024, Unit3 Design Studio supported Ruthin School with strategic architectural masterplanning to help guide the future redevelopment of its historic North Wales campus. Our work focused on reviewing existing school assets, identifying opportunities for phased improvement, and developing practical design strategies to enhance teaching, boarding, sport and student accommodation facilities.
The study considered a range of redevelopment options across the campus, including proposals for the cricket pavilion, existing student accommodation buildings, temporary teaching accommodation, the science building and the historic main school building. From an architectural perspective, the work balanced the school’s heritage character with the need for modern, flexible and efficient education spaces capable of supporting future growth.
Unit3 also provided planning support for the retention of existing temporary portacabin teaching accommodation, helping the school maintain operational continuity while longer-term masterplanning options were explored.
This project demonstrates Unit3’s experience in education architecture, school masterplanning, heritage building redevelopment, student accommodation design, planning applications and strategic estate planning in North Wales.
