LIVERPOOL’S SMALLEST ROOF TERRACE

Hidden in the heart of the city centre is an urban forest waiting to be found…
High above the streets of Liverpool amongst the dull grey and beige rooftops, what once belonged on a building site has now been transformed into an urban forest; bright, colourful and totally unexpected! We propose a stunning new addition to the roof of Bruntwood’s Queen Insurance Building – an urban forest; created using reclaimed building materials and salvaged items that provide a fun and quirky external terrace for the buildings tenants, staff and visitors.
Three distinctive areas are created using brightly painted reclaimed scaffolding poles that provide vertical height, dramatic shadows, a safe and secure environment and a defined space for meetings, relaxation and partying. To enhance the character and drama of the design, a local artist will provide a striking forest inspired mural on the large chimney wall – linking up the colours and vertical nature of the terrace below.
Low Maintenance: Once constructed, the entire installation requires no maintenance other than an occasional visual inspection. All plants proposed are hardy species – evergreens, grasses, wildflowers, heather and bamboo that require little or no maintenance.
Recycled and Sustainable Materials: The design echo’s the visual identity of construction works prominent in Liverpool and aims to be constructed as much as possible from reclaimed building materials including; scaffolding poles and boards, paint remnants, salvaged chimney pots and decking made from timber pallets. Construction of the design could be undertaken by any competent builders and all materials specified are readily available in the local area – often be sourced for free or at minimal cost.
Design Features: Tree mural with bird boxes, communal seating and swing, maintenance access is retained for air-con units and the roof void, lightweight structure and fall protection around the roof edge provided.
