We’re delighted to announce that Studio in the Woods has been selected as a finalist in the Northern Design Awards, recognising a programme that has been bringing architectural education into the landscape since 2017.

Through our ongoing involvement with the University of Liverpool, Unit3 Design Studio helps students take their ideas beyond drawings and models and experience the challenges and rewards of building at full scale.

Based in North Wales, Studio in the Woods brings together students, tutors and practising architects to explore design through hands-on construction. The programme encourages participants to consider how materials, structure, craftsmanship and setting come together—and how decisions made in the design studio translate into something that can actually be built.

At its heart is a simple belief: making is an essential part of learning to design. Working together on a live build develops practical understanding alongside communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills. It gives students the opportunity to test ideas, adapt to challenges and share responsibility for a finished structure.

This year’s timber zome in Bodfari is the latest chapter in that continuing story. Delivered with support from the Woodland Skills Centre, it builds on the programme’s longstanding commitment to connecting architectural education with practical experience.

Being named a Northern Design Awards finalist is a proud moment for everyone involved. For Unit3, it is an opportunity to celebrate the students, tutors, collaborators and supporters who have helped shape Studio in the Woods since 2017.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed along the way—and congratulations to our fellow finalists!
